![]() To me not just sideways, but a bit backwards. Side one of Atom Heart Mother is composed solely of the title track, which began its life as The Amazing Pudding, a working title that would later. Their approach and sound drastically changed. I find DSOTM the turning point, where they went from a cohesive band that could literally make ANY song, to a group that realized they could make money. Pink Floyds first recordings with an orchestra pressed on 180 gram vinyl mastered by James Guthrie for optimum stereo sound. Yes the 4 big commercial ablums have been played to death, and that is a big part of it, but also many simply did not realize the earlier stuff was good, due to many reviewers citing DSOTM and forwards as being the big selling commercial time, and not giving the older stuff a chance. Most very casual floyd fans, only like DSOTM, Wish, Animals, Wall, but the real creative period with very inspired music, that has real emotion and heart, and are 4 guys really just having fun, doing what they want, is all BEFORE DSOTM. ![]() Oddly, Pink Floyd never made a full psych-folk album in the vein of “If” and Gilmour’s “Fat Old Sun,” which becomes even more of a shame when they end Atom Heart Mother with “Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast,” a cut-and-paste assemblage of sounds that never coalesces into much of anything.30 years ago, I would have totally agreed with you.īut looking back over many years hindsight, the 4 big commercial albums are still good musically, but the importance of the pre-DSOTM stuff, has finally come to the forefront. In this case, they cast an orchestra and a choir as the leads, and the horn fanfare and choral harmonies hint at the even more ambitious arrangements throughout that decade. But “Atom Heart Mother”-all six movements-at the very least shows the band developing and entertaining new ideas, consciously moving away from the space rock label they’d been saddled with. Atom Heart Mother is a six-piece suite music, which was released in 1970 from the album with a similar title. 2, 1970, included collaborations with a brass section and choir, paired with one of their most bizarre improvisational moments. Yes, the album stretches its six-part title track across an entire LP side, and yes, that suite meanders wildly and seemingly without purpose, as though they’re making it up as they go along but getting distracted almost constantly. They’re not exactly wrong, but they’re not exactly right either. Roger Waters and David Gilmour have spent 40 years playing this 1970 album down, labeling it pompous, overblown, embarrassing-a low point in the band’s creative history.
